Java Backend Engineer

Build and scale the backend services powering AmritSmile — scheduling, billing, records and real-time APIs. Java, Spring Boot, REST.

About the role

AmritSmile is the clinic OS for dental practices across India. Behind every fast appointment booking, every instant billing summary and every real-time calendar update is a backend that never sleeps. We are looking for a Java Backend Engineer who takes pride in writing clean, scalable, production-grade code — someone who thinks about concurrency, caching and correctness the way a dentist thinks about precision.

You will own significant parts of our core platform: the scheduling engine, the billing pipeline, the patient record APIs and the real-time event system that keeps every device in a clinic in sync. This is greenfield work in many areas — you will make architectural decisions that matter.

What you will do

  • Design, build and maintain RESTful APIs consumed by the web, mobile and third-party integrations
  • Own the scheduling engine — slot allocation, conflict resolution, waitlist management and reminders
  • Build and scale the billing pipeline — invoice generation, GST computation and payment reconciliation
  • Write performant database queries across MySQL and Redis; optimise slow paths before they become incidents
  • Implement real-time features using WebSockets / SSE so clinic staff always see live data
  • Write comprehensive unit and integration tests; maintain >80% coverage on critical paths
  • Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews and on-call rotations
  • Work closely with the frontend team to design clean, well-typed API contracts

What we are looking for

  • 2+ years of professional experience writing production Java (Java 11+)
  • Strong understanding of Spring Boot, Spring Security and Spring Data JPA
  • Solid grasp of relational databases — schema design, indexing and query optimisation (MySQL preferred)
  • Experience with REST API design principles and versioning strategies
  • Comfortable with Git, CI/CD pipelines and deploying to cloud environments (AWS preferred)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to reason about distributed systems
  • Good written and spoken English — we are a remote-first team

Nice to have

  • Experience with Redis for caching and session management
  • Familiarity with message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka)
  • Prior work in healthtech, fintech or any domain with strict data-integrity requirements
  • Knowledge of DPDPA or HIPAA compliance requirements
